Judge Carlos Cortez after his December arrest

UPDATE at 6:22 p.m.: Judge Cortez just issued this response to his challenger’s statement:

“It is unbelievable to me that someone who is running for Judge would continue to rely upon false allegations which have now been reviewed by a Dallas County Grand Jury. This is an indication on what kind of judge she would be — not wait for all the evidence to come out in court before she rules, but instead, rely upon inaccurate media reports and the internet.  A good judge applies the law to the facts of the case and does not judge someone based on a Google search.  This is something my opponent would have known had she actually tried a civil case in the last two decades.  Bonnie Goldstein owes an apology to the citizens of Dallas County, especially those people who have also been falsely accused of crimes they didn’t commit.”

UPDATE at 4:47 p.m.: Cortez said at the news conference that the case has “touched every aspect of my life,” my colleague Matthew Watkins reports.

The judge and his lawyers questioned the quality of the investigation by Dallas police, saying it was handled by a rookie officer who should have been more careful.

Cortez was arrested shortly after his ex-girlfriend complained of abuse. Surveillance video from his building would have shown inconsistencies in his accuser’s story, the judge’s lawyers said. (The News has asked DPD for a response but has not received one yet.) … [visit site to read more]
